OPR – Spring Summer 2020 Trends by Color Portfolio

#1 Trend – Take it Easy

Spring/Summer 2020 arrives with a relaxed, calm, attitude.  Apparel is soft and easy.  Fabrics are natural, light, and breezy.  Cotton fabrics are slightly washed for a relaxed hand.  Finishes are softly pressed.  Linen blends are key, silk is added to create subtle shine.  In Women’s, Silk, Sand-washed Silk, Cotton/Rayon, Georgette inspired fabrics also emerge. Mesh weave fabrics are light and airy for knits and sweaters.  Slub textures, vertical textures, heathers, and space dye knits are up-trending.

Silhouettes are comfortable, roomy, but not sloppy.  This trend features both tailored and casual silhouettes as well as active wear details.  In Menswear, trouser walk shorts, and stripe shorts are key.  Full elastic waistbands with drawstrings appear on shorts and slacks. Men’s woven shirts feature relaxed collars, fewer pockets, and rolled up sleeves.  Womenswear features, roomy, belted, or knotted, trousers and shorts.  Feminine blouses are highlighted along with, one shoulder, and wrap silhouettes.  Flowy, casual dresses will be an important category.

There are very few patterns under this trend, instead color and fabric are highlighted.  Neutrals continue such as Sand, Beige, and Taupe.  White is a fashion statement and is merchandised with softer tones, such as Sky Blue, Aqua, Mint, Pink, Purple, and Sunset Oranges.

#2 Trend – American Heartland

The Americana trend continues but with a rustic, handcrafted details, mixed with an athletic, nautical inspired theme.  Silhouettes are classic intermixed with active details.  Due to the active wear trend merging with the other apparel trends, cotton/nylon fabrics or nylon fabrics, and fleece mingle with the traditional Spring/Summer fabrics, promoting a nautical, active inspired silhouette.  Classic fabrics continue, featuring cotton, jersey, pique, and twill.

Bold, classic, sporty, colors mix with Khaki, White, and Blue.  Orange Reds, and Corals, are key.  Yellow and Grass Greens add pop to the palette.  Darker shades of Wine, Dark Green, and Navy add contrast.

Plaids and Stripes are the key pattern for Men and Women.  Color blocking, abstract graphics, and tipping emerge.  Patchwork and mix media patterns are part of the trend.  Artisanal, handcrafted details highlights silhouettes in women’s, along with raw edges, rick-rack, and embroidery.

#3 Trend – Desert Blooms

Desert Blooms emphasizes a summer expedition trend, inspired by deserts and canyons.  The color palette features burnt Oranges, sunbaked Yellows, canyon Browns, and Cactus Greens.  White is added for bold contrast. Khaki, Beige, and Taupe are key neutrals.

Silhouettes are loose, simple, flowing, belted, or wrapped. Jackets are key this season. Shirts and Slacks feature clean utility pockets.  Newness is emerging from utility styling infused with trekking and hiking details.  Styles are more refined than previous seasons featuring safari or utility silhouettes.

Cotton and Linen blends are key, natural is an overall theme.  Texture is being added to knits and woven fabrics, such as canvas, mesh, open weaves, slub effects, and work wear fabrics.  Coated finishes emerge along with light weight suede and leather.

There are less patterns featured under the Desert Blooms trend because the emphasis is on color, fabric, and utility silhouettes.  Desert flowers and darker, colored stripes emerge.
